Hoverboard Recall: Did You Suffer an Injury?

Just a few years ago, the only idea of a hoverboard was what they saw Marty McFly on in “Back to the Future.” However, today, these self-balancing scooters have become a reality. For the past year, more and more consumers have purchased and begun using these devices. However, besides the obvious safety risk of falling off or becoming unbalanced, there were a number of other hazards associated with these hoverboards, as well.

One of the hazards was the potential for a fire or even explosion. Due to these concerns, earlier in the year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall for certain hoverboards – directly related to these concerns and issues.

In July of 2016 approximately half of a million hoverboard units were recalled because of the lithium-ion battery backs posting the risk of overheating, which could result in an explosion or fire. There have been more than 100 reported and documented incidents of these products overheating due to the battery pack. Some of these cases even resulted in an injury.

Now if you own a hoverboard, you may wonder how you can tell if your hoverboard has been included in this recall. If you made your purchase between the dates of July 2015 and May 2016, then you may need to contact the merchandiser to determine if your hoverboard poses fire or explosion risks.

The majority of companies that had products recalled are offering customers refunds for the product, but there are some that will also provide a repair or replacement at no additional fee. Most of the recalled products sold for between $350 and $900.

If you or someone you know was injured due to the overheating or explosion of a hoverboard, then you may also have grounds to file a lawsuit. In order to determine if you have a case, it is best to get in touch with an attorney who handles product liability cases. Not all hoverboards will qualify for this type of action; however, there are several people who have successfully received compensation due to an injury these products caused.

While there is the option to pursue this legal action on your own, this is typically not a smart move. The fact is, there are several complexities to any lawsuit that only an experienced attorney can handle. Hiring someone who is well-versed in this area of law will help ensure that the best possible results for the case are achieved.
