Spinal cord injuries due to car accidents are common

People who experience a car accident in Missouri may suffer broken bones and bruises. Among the worst possible outcomes are spinal cord injuries. They are also more common than most people realize. The main reason this type of injury ranks among the worst is that it can severely impact a person’s quality of life. People with spinal cord injuries may lose the ability to walk or even the sense of touch.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine studied patients involved in a car crash between 2004 and 2009. In the study, 6.6% of patients ended up with spinal cord injuries. Of the people who suffered these injuries, 86.6% were the driver of the vehicle. All the rest were passengers. The most common factor in an accident that seemed to cause spinal injuries was vehicle rollover.

The study concluded that people have a high likelihood of suffering a spinal cord injury after a car crash. It also found that in many of the instances, the injuries are so disabling that it affects a person’s earning ability and social life. This is despite the many efforts car manufacturers have made at improving safety. These include everything from crumple zones to multiple airbags on all sides.

Many patients worry about the financial aspect of their injury and with good reason. Mayo Clinic states that people who suffer spinal injuries may undergo surgery, try experimental treatments and take medications. All of these require money. If the injured party does not have health insurance and the driver responsible refuses to take responsibility, this can make an already bad situation feel a lot worse.
